The French-Brazilian Oncology Society granted the first Gustave Roussy Award to Professor Thomas Tursz. Professor Tursz is the director of the Gustave Roussy Insitute, the largest cancer research and treatment center in Europe. He was unanimously chosen by the French-Brazilian Society because of his efforts to strengthen the bonds between France and Brazil. He was one of the founders of the French-Brazilian Oncology Society in 2001 and has always helped in the organization of oncology congresses bringing forth celebrated physicians and investigators. Professor Tursz received Brazilian delegations of medical doctors at the Gustave Roussy Institute in 2000 and in 2005. He literally opened the hospital doors for us, as well as the doors leading to the Basic Science Research Pavilion. In addition, Professor Tursz welcomes and helps young residents who come to the Institute to specialize in oncology.

We now have two physicians who will stay one year at the Institute thanks to the support granted by Professor Tursz. Professor Tursz is a brilliant investigator and has published many articles about melanoma, sarcoma, Epstein-Barr virus and new immunity treatments. Born in Cracow, Poland, in 1946, he became an intern at the hospitals in Paris in 1969 and was appointed Professor of Medicine at Paris-Sud University in 1986, as well as head of the Cancer Medicine Service of the Gustave Roussy Institute in the same year. Professor Tursz directed the Tumoral Biology Laboratory of the Gustave Roussy Institute from 1984 to 1996. He was one of the first physicians in France to use new cancer therapies such as interferon and interleukin-2. He was named Director of the hospital in 1994, a post he still holds, consequence of his outstanding work and dedication.

Besides rebuilding and remodeling the hospital facilities, he opened the most modern outpatient facilities in Europe in October 2005. Pathology, imaging services and the outpatient clinics are now totally integrated. Professor Tursz also was the first to suggest the creation of the Gustave Roussy Foundation, which is directed by Simone Weil, as well as the Cancerpole of Paris. Thanks to the efforts of Professor Tursz, the Gustave Roussy Institute has achieved many goals set forth by its founder, Gustave Roussy. Professor Thomas Tursz is also chairman of the federation of centers in France that fight cancer and is vice chairman of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) as well as professor at the XI University of Paris. He is married for over thirty years to Anne Tursz, a brilliant pediatrician and research director of the Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM). The couple has one son, a young and brilliant diplomat who is serving in Poland.

Dearest professor and friend Thomas Tursz, please receive our homage.
